A scientific 2D color system

ColorLoop.

An open, two-dimensional color system that visualises the physical, physiological, and psychological relationships between all chromatic and achromatic colors — arranged on the topology of a Möbius strip using the principles of continuity and complementary.

The system

A two-dimensional map of color.

ColorLoop is an innovative color system: complementary color pairs arranged on a Möbius strip, illustrating the physical, physiological and psychological relationships of color in their entirety at a glance.

Purpose & use.

The arrangement of complementary color pairs on a Möbius strip forms the basis of a color system that illustrates the physical, physiological, and psychological relationships of chromatic colors, achromatic colors and their brightness relations — all visible in their entirety at a single glance.

What ColorLoop enables

  • The focus is set on the complementary effect of colors — the most powerful instrument for color design. Complementary color pairs cannot be seen by the human eye at the same time; their combination therefore creates magical effects, even at low intensity.
  • Color ideas can be inspired, communicated and visualized anywhere.
  • Individual colors — even those with low intensity — can be placed within the overall context of colors, their complementary counterpart, brightness and effect.
  • Color relationships can be compared and clearly understood.
  • You can find color combinations that perfectly fulfill the purpose you want: beautiful, daring, with a “wow”-effect.

Who it is for

ColorLoop is a helpful tool for anyone working with color, such as education and didactics, interior design, fine art, color psychology, architecture, color consulting, color design, graphic design, and floristry.

Concept.

ColorLoop does not prescribe harmonies or predefined color solutions. Instead, its goal is

  • to convey a fundamental understanding of colors.
  • to present the world of color in a way that is scientifically accurate and artistically appealing.
  • to enable the independent development of color solutions.
  • to provide orientation and an overview of all colors.

It trains the most important measurement tool one always has: the eyes.

Characteristics.

The ColorLoop color system is

  • two-dimensional
  • compact
  • easy to understand
  • balanced
  • sufficiently precise
  • closely aligned with physical reality

It

  • provides orientation and an overview of all colors.
  • shows complementary pairs close enough to be perceived simultaneously, without relying on color memory.
  • acts as a portable color memory.
  • helps clearly explain personal color ideas to others.
  • creates order — including in psychological color perception.
  • symbolizes wholeness and polarity.
